Howard Thompson approaches his art by finding the extraordinary beauty in the small spaces of our everyday surroundings – in the cityscape as well as in the wide expanses of open terrain. While he prefers black and white, Sepia-toning is a particular passion of his. Through his lens, he is always seeking to capture that singular moment and place where lines and shapes convene to expose how fascinating the ordinary can be if we stop and take it in. In summary, some of the subjects and images of Thompson’s work may at first glance look familiar, but he has a fresh edge and a sharp eye for surprising detail.

 

Thompson grew up in Philadelphia where he acquired his love of photography. When he was in junior high school his brother gave him his first 35 mm camera, but by then he already had gained some proficiency by using borrowed or loaned cameras. He joined the Army directly after graduating from high school. Throughout his distinguished 26-year military career, his cameras always accompanied him as he traveled to the far reaches of the world. He retired as Sgt. First Class in 1994.

 

His work has won commendations in national competitions and he has participated in gallery shows. Thompson currently lives in Dallas, Texas.
